Depending on which version of Delphi you have, you start with more than 100 components. Using the components on the Component palette, you can quickly create an interface for your application. In many cases there are several components that can all perform the desired action, but we might choose one because it has greater capacity, better performance, or a lesser impact on system resources.

However, the time will come for you to think: "If this label control could just show 3D text", and "How splendid it would be for this grid to have multi line captions..."

We know that Delphi was built in Delphi. This means that developing custom components is easy as building a not-so-simple Delphi application. Nevertheless, many of us don't have time to mess around with building custom components. There is a 99% chance that someone has already written or modified a component that will do exactly what you need.

Component, my kingdom for a Component
What follows is a quick reference to some of the best Delphi component resource Web sites around the Net. The order of the sites is alphabetical, and I can't say that I like or prefer one site more than another. All sites listed here are making a great contribution to Borland Delphi community. You shouldn't stick to just one, try them all and you'll certainly find what you seek for.

In the first place I was thinking of this article as an overview of such sites. However, I'm going to give you some general information concerning all listed sites and than just link to them. If you know of any good Delphi component resource site please mail me.

The most important thing for Delphi developer is to have some search capability included in the site (and almost every site here has something to help us find the desired component). There are approximately 3000 components per site (some sites have more, some have less). Some of the sites have listed freeware/shareware separatelly from commercial components (this is important if you prefer not to give any money for someone elses work). Note: free component sets, only.

   Installing components in Delphi
Once you find the component you were looking for you need to install it. Mostly, the package will include some kind of a "readme.txt" file describing what steps are required for the component(s) to appear inside the IDE. If not, here's some help:
